May 19, 2013—Shane Mosley had a successful comeback last night against Pablo Cesar Cano in Cano’s backyard of Cancun, Mexico at the Grand Oasis Resort. Mosley hadn’t competed in over a year — a one-sided loss at the hands of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez” back on May 5, 2012 — and Cano last fought in October of last year against  Paul Malignaggi, although he lost that fight many believe he did enough to earn the nod.

Mosley started off slow and appeared to be a bit sluggish. Cano took advantage by picking his moments and edged out some close rounds by being the more accurate puncher. Cano had landed the most significant shots heading into the 4th round, but that was the round that Mosley began to come alive. He stepped up his punch output and made most of his power shots count.

Cano was not willing to engage in a way that he has displayed in the past and he was being walked down. Mosley was dictating the pace with Cano doing very little to prevent it. The fight really picked up in the 9th round as both fighters traded shots in the center of the ring. Mosley was loading up and delivering the kind of shots that kept Cano honest.

It seemed like every time Cano tried to step it up Mosley was right there, ready to take it back. To his credit, Cano stayed in the fight and fought tough right up until the end, but all he did was prove he has a durable chin.

Mosley closed the show strong and took the unanimous decision win with the scores of 115-113 on all 3 scorecards. The win earned Mosley a vacant WBC International welterweight title, whatever that means. More importantly, Mosley showed he still has some skill and enough will to remain competitive against the division’s elite, well at least the bottom half of the top 10. You have to figure this win will put Mosley in a position to receive a quality fight on a bigger network. He may not unify the titles in his remaining years, but based on last night’s performance Mosley appears to have several options in front of him and I personally can think of a few fights that I’d love to see him in before he hangs it up for good.
