Tyson Fury - Wladimir KlitschkoUndisputed world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury WILL attend this Sunday’s (December 20) BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, despite weeks of controversy surrounding his nomination.

Fury, 27, shook up the sporting landscape when dethroning former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko by unanimous decision on November 28 in Dusseldorf, Germany, in front of a huge stadium crowd.

In doing so, he usurped one of the all-time great heavyweight champions, dominant for nearly a decade, and became only the third undisputed linear heavyweight champion of the world to hail from Great Britain (following in the footsteps of Bob Fitzsimmons and Lennox Lewis).

In addition to winning the WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO and The Ring Magazine world heavyweight titles, Fury has also remained undefeated in 25 professional bouts and previously won British, Irish, Commonwealth and European heavyweight belts.

Known for his charisma and larger-than-life personality, Fury is considered a breath of fresh air in boxing’s heavyweight division and has quickly emerged as one of the most recognisable and polarising sportsmen on the planet.

In terms of the magnitude of his achievement this year, he stands alone in Britain. And, in terms of personality, few in the world can claim to be bigger.

Voting will open as announced in the show, which starts at 18:50 GMT (BBC1) on Sunday, 20 December.
