As we get closer to September 13th where Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be once again squaring off against Marcos Maidana, in a rematch from May, his father, and trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. spoke with the media. One of the topics that came up was his opinion on the recent fight between Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara. As usual, Floyd Sr. did not hold back any of his opinions when being questioned about who he thought won and why did felt Lara lost.

First, when asked if it was a boring fight, Floyd Sr. said, “It wasn’t a fight I’d pay to see.” When the follow up question was if he thought the right guy won, he responded, “The right guy got it, but only because the other guy wasn’t doing nothing. You can’t win no fight just running. If the man would have threw some punches, he would have won the fight.” He was then asked who he’d like to see Canelo face next ”Someone just said he gonna fight…Cotto?

I’m just gonna say, if he fight like that, come on man, Cotto gonna throw some punches. Cotto’s gonna come straight to you. Canelo will be throwing all these punches to the air and Cotto’s going to be landing punches”, said Floyd Sr.

When asked about how this fight might go in the rematch, Floyd Sr. said, “You gonna see it, same results. I think about us doing something different, but the results gonna be the same.” Floyd Sr. was then asked if Floyd needs to do anything different in the rematch, Floyd Sr. said, “People may agree with me or not, but everything Maidana did was illegal. He hit below the belt. He hit behind the head. He twists arms. He threw knees. He head butted. That’s MMA kind of fight. Tony Weeks, I always thought he was a cool guy, a nice guy, and I’m not saying he ain’t nice still, but if I got something to do with it, he will not be referring my son’s fight. I guarantee you that.”

The possibility of Floyd Jr. fighting in New York, specifically Barclays Center in Brooklyn, was brought up to Floyd Sr. “Man, Floyd don’t need to be going to no New York. For what? He can do it right here.”

When asked why Vegas the best place? Floyd Sr. responded, “I came out here because I just came out of prison when I came here. And then Floyd wanted me to come out here. So I came out here. I was training him before I went to prison.” A reporter responded that “No State Tax helps too, right?” Floyd Sr. quickly said, “Exactly!”

Floyd Sr. also shot down rumors of Floyd going to middleweight to beat Miguel Cotto, a fighter he beat at 154. “Let me explain something to you. When you say middleweight, it ain’t junior welter, it ain’t welter, it ain’t junior middleweight, its middleweight. Evidently he went to middleweight because he can hold middleweight. Floyd don’t got no business fighting there. Floyd is nowhere that kind of size. Of course Cotto going to get bigger cause he’s middleweight and when you get bigger, you get stronger. So there ain’t no need for it. He already did what he needed to do. He don’t gotta prove nothing no more. And he won unanimous. Done!”, said Floyd Sr.

The quick summation of the interview with Floyd Sr. would be: he felt Lara did nothing and didn’t deserve to win, Canelo didn’t do much either, but did more than Lara, so it was a boring fight, he feels Maidana was dirty in the 1st fight, and there will be no Mayweather-Cotto fight at middleweight. Hopefully soon after the rematch we will start to get some hints of the “Big Surprise” that Floyd says he has in store for next May, but until then, there are still lots of good fights to enjoy in the meantime for 2014, time sit back and enjoy them.
