AbelSanchezandGennadyGolovkin_big__b7b8cThaBoxingVoice.com had a chance to speak with Abel Sanchez, trainer of Gennady Golovkin. The 32-year old middleweight sensation from Kazachstan is fighting Marco Antonio Rubio on October 18, at the Stubhub center in Carson, California.
Abel Sanchez expects a strong Rubio come fight night. “Rubio has been on the big stage before. So he will not be afraid in the ring”, the trainer told us. The 34-year old Mexican is coming off a six fight winning streak, after losing to his countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. back in 2012.
We asked the veteran trainer whether he thinks that the predominate Mexican crowd in Southern California will support his fighter. He responded, “I think at the introduction, Rubio will be the favorite, but when the fight is on and ‘Triple G’ is landing some hard shots, they will love him just as much. Mexicans love a good fight.”
After several fights in New York and now L.A., the next stop is likely to be Las Vegas. Which fights does Abel Sanchez think will make Golovkin a Las Vegas and PPV fighter? “There are more then a few. Cotto, Canelo, Chavez, Froch and of course Floyd. Floyd is Gennady’s dream fight. That is the only fight he is willing to go to 154 for.”
We concluded the interview with asking Abel Sanchez to say something to the fans who are on the fence about buying tickets for this fight. Abel Sanchez said to them, “With every great fighter, like Leonard and Ali, you like to be able to say, I was at his first fight. If you come to this fight, you will be able to say that you were at the first fight in Southern California of the great Gennady Golovkin.”
