Abner MaresFormer three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KO’s), last outing in the ring, was very exciting one. Mares took on Leo Santa Cruz back in August. Mares lost a majority decision to Santa Cruz with two judges being against him and the third judge having the fight a draw. After the fight, Mares had stated that he would love a rematch, and Santa Cruz had stated that he would give him the rematch but nothing is set in stone until the contracts are signed, and the fighters are staring at each other from across the ring. Should the rematch not take place, Mares has his eye on another world champion.

On October 14th, Welshman fighter Lee “The Barry Boy Assassin” Selby made his U.S. debut when he took on and successfully defended his newly won IBF world featherweight title against former three division world champion Fernando Montiel. The fight itself was exciting with Selby on the attack and Montiel looking to counter and at times go on the offensive. Selby didn’t look spectacular, but he got the job done while getting busted up in the process which has given Mares interest in the fight.

Mares took to social media to state that he wants to fight the best and that Selby is on the list of who he wants to fight. He also praised Montiel for the fight with Selby and stated that he can still hang in there with the top dogs.

“Would love to get a shot at Lee Selby,” said Mares. “Great fight last night and congratulations, but as you guys know I like great challenges. Great fight Fernando Montiel. You still have what it takes.”

A fight with Selby is very possible for Mares as Selby has stated that he will only be fighting top fighters from around the world from now on, and he wants to fight in the U.S. again.
