Adrien BronerAdrien Broner was making the rounds after his complete shutout of John Molina Jr. on Premier Boxing Champions’ debut on NBC. ThaBoxingVoice and some other members of the press asked Broner about what he takes away from a victory like this and Broner responded with an odd mix of vagary and cockiness.

Broner said, “After tonight, I figured out I got what everybody don’t have and why not use it? If I can come outta every fight and uh… no bruises and pick some millions up, then why not?”

When Broner was then pressed to define what exactly he had that everybody did not have, he proceeded to play coy and leave it hanging.

“You seen it, you can name it… whatever you wanna do…”

What I saw was Adrien Broner completely shutout a slower overmatched fighter in John Molina Jr. I saw Broner avoid some of the sloppiest looping punches; I have ever seen a professional throw. I saw Broner handle a fighter that has lost 4 of his last 6 fights, and may have no business getting back in the ring anytime soon. I don’t know what to name it but I know what I saw, and it didn’t say much.

Fortunately, Broner has more than some vague riddles to tell the press. He also revealed some self-awareness and insight into his career and how he became lackadaisical in the ring.

“I always had good defense, but I got stuck. You know, when you fight fighters sometimes you can get comfortable in just beating fighters and not using everything that you have… we worked on that. There’s a lot of shots that people hit me with that I shouldn’t get hit with.”

What Broner is saying is that fighting overmatched guys made him lazy. It’s a positive sign that he recognizes how weaker competition can negatively affect how he applies his skills in the ring. We can all hope that this might lead Broner into more attractive and competitive fights in the near future.

Adrien “The Problem” Broner’s next fight is scheduled for June 20th in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.
