Chris AlgieriLast Friday, Chris Algieri was a heavy underdog against Amir Khan.

Khan, according the oddsmakers, should have ran through Chris Algieri. Someone forgot to tell Chris Algieri he was supposed to come to be an opponent.

In his first fight with new trainer John David Jackson, Algieri was more aggressive.

He wobbled Khan in round 1 with an overhand right. Many people felt Algieri didn’t have the power to hurt Khan. Algieri did, but it wasn’t enough power to stop Khan. Normally a fighter who fights off the back foot, Jackson taught Algieri to press and sit on his shots. He made a good account for himself even in defeat.

Algieri feels the top fights are at 147, so even though he feels he can make 140 where he held a world title; he’s going to stay at the welterweight division because that’s where all the good fights are.

“All the good fighters are here in the 140’s,” Algieri told the media. “I’ve always said I wanted to stay in the 40’s, 40 or 47, but all the top guys are here at 147. I’m here.”

Coming off a 2014 that saw him beat Emmanuel Taylor and Ruslan Provodnikov while suffering a defeat to Manny Pacquiao; one would think Algieri would take a soft touch to work out the new teachings of a new trainer. But Not Algieri, he loves the challenge.

“I was challenging myself; I’m that kind of guy,” Algieri said. “I don’t look for opponents, when an opportunity comes, I’ll take it. There are a lot of guys out there that say it’s not enough money, it’s in the wrong place, I take them. I’m a fighter, I like to fight, and I like to have these opportunities. I said it before this fight people are talking about Khan; he fought this guy, that guy, I haven’t had the opportunities to fight those guys, that’s all. I need some opportunities.”
