April 20th has come and gone and for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez the anticipation has ended and the celebration is beginning. Canelo won what was a close fight in my book against Austin Trout. I had the bout 114-113 which was close to what two of the judges had it and the third judge added controversy with his 118-109 scorecard.

In the first round it seemed clear that Trout would control the tempo of the fight. He was more aggressive and established his jab very well. “Canelo” on the other hand threw and landed the harder shots and his defense seemed vastly improved, as he was continuously slipping shots.

As the fight wore on Trout was the busier fighter but could hardly land anything. When “Canelo” threw and landed they were effective punches that caused the pro “Canelo” crowd to go wild.

In the 7th round Austin Trout was dropped for the first time in his career and he appeared to be pretty hurt.  After the knockdown “Canelo” followed up by attacking Trout vigorously and then he eased up a bit, allowing Trout to fight back and get himself back into the fight.

For the last five rounds the intensity in the air was thick. Trout began working harder and throwing more punches but missed quite a few while occasionally landing some effective blows as well. “Canelo“decided to box and would on occasion trade punches landing hard shots.

In the end, the right man won the fight. Both fighters were humble in their post fight interviews and showed a mutual respect for one another.

Overall the fight was great for both fighters and a great fight for boxing.
