Khan-AlexanderAmir Khan and Devon Alexander are set to fight on December 13 on Showtime, on the same night Timothy Bradley squares off against Diego Chaves on HBO. When two opposing networks air a bout at the same time, its statistically proven to drop ratings significantly.

De La Hoya told Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, “[Airing both fights at the same time] couldn’t be avoided, so there will be different start times. I’ve talked to HBO about it. I’ve talked to [Top Rank president] Todd duBoef about it. I’ve talked to Showtime. We have so many dates and so many fighters, this couldn’t be avoided, but the good thing is, we’re giving the fans a great show and that’s the most important thing.”

Amir Khan who almost landed a bout against Mayweather this past year, has a golden opportunity to possibly solidify a fight against the best pound for pound fighter in the world in 2015. Despite ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recent bashing against Amir Khan, many boxing insiders would agree Khan might be the toughest opponent for Mayweather in his division. Roy Jones Jr. and Paulie Malignaggi have been adamant on Khan giving Mayweather problems.

In an ESNEWS interview Roy Jones Jr. stated, “[Amir Khan], that’s the only fighter I believe that has a chance to disrupt his [Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s] undefeated record. Nobody else out there is going to disrupt it. I agree with him [Paulie Malignaggi]. Everyone else I think is easy for Floyd to beat except Amir Khan.”

If Khan does in fact lose to Alexander, it would be virtually impossible to land a fight against Mayweather. There will be a lot of pressure on Khan to put on a great performance for a possible opportunity of a lifetime in 2015.

On the other hand Alexander is also trying to reenter the spotlight, and establish himself as one of the top fighters in his division. Alexander will be a tough opponent to overcome. He has not received much credit in the boxing landscape even after defeating Lucas Matthysse in a fight which could have honestly gone either way, or for dominating Marcos Maidana in every round. Even in his lost against Shawn Porter, he continued to fight back despite being consistently staggered in the early stages of the fight. Alexander’s recent dominating performance over Jesus Soto Karass, has allowed him to have a second chance in reinvigorating his career against Khan.

If Alexander wins, possible matchups against Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, Robert Guerrero, and other top fighters will arise. Also there has been speculation of Mayweather extending his contract, which would leave the possibility of Alexander landing the golden ticket.

Al Haymon has been criticized this year for creating lackluster matchups. Perhaps this bout is a sign of things to come in the year 2015.

On a final note: Keith Thurman is scheduled to fight on the undercard with an opponent yet to be announced.
