20120504_111038_boxing_presser_300Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is part of the ongoing trend of fighters sitting out and refraining from action in an effort to dispute their promotional contracts. The difference between Chavez Jr. and other fighters like Andre Ward and Mikey Garcia is that Chavez Jr. is leaving a lot more money on the table because he has a higher marketability due to his Hispanic following. Whether he deserves the fan base is another issue, but there are plenty of money fights out there for Chavez Jr.

One of those fights is Chavez Jr. versus the UK’s Carl Froch. It has the potential to produce massive numbers. It had a working date of January, but that was before Chavez Jr. froze himself out of competing at all by refusing to negotiate with Top Rank.

Chavez Jr. has insisted that he is free of his Top Rank contract, but Bob Arum disagrees and maintains that Chavez Jr. still has fight obligations left on said contract.

There are reports that Chavez Jr. and Froch will meet in March. Eddie Hearn, Froch’s promoter, is convinced that he can make the fight a reality, but Arum is clear on the matter and has told Thaboxingvoice.com that it can’t be done without Top Rank’s involvement.

“It’s not going to happen (Chavez Jr.-Froch) because Chavez is under contract with us, period. And until he honors the contract with us no fight is going to happen without everybody being subject to litigation,” Arum told Thaboxingvoice.com.
