download (1)In then opening bout of the HBO telecast Mauricio Herrera took on Jose Benavidez Jr. and Herrera fell victim to the politics of boxing once again losing a unanimous decision 116-112 116-112 117-111.
This is the second time this year Herrera has lost a controversial decision. He suffered the same fate against Danny Garcia in Puerto Rico earlier this year.

Herrera controlled the pace early on seeming to easily sweep the first 3 rounds. Benavidez began to find his way into the fight in the 4th round landing body shots and countering effectively at times but Herrera was more consistent landing solid jabs to the body and head.

The middle rounds were close as Herrera continued to land his jab and was able to push the bigger Benavidez to the ropes and land good body shots. Benavidez landed the more eye catching shots but he was very inactive at times and only fought in spots. There was a lot of give and take in the fight and Benavidez did look very good at times, but Herrera was able to fight his style thought the bout and controlled the pace.

Overall Herrera was much more consistent over the course of 12 rounds than Benavidez was in my opinion. The HBO telecast made reference several times to Benavidez possibly getting the benefit of the doubt on the score cards due to his age and being the house fighter and that is exactly what happened.

Mauricio Herrera was simply not going to be permitted to win a decision tonight for the second time this year Herrera has fallen victim to the powers that be in boxing.
