Floyd Mayweather retired from the sport of boxing this past September with a flawless 49-0 record and a claim that he is TBE — The Best Ever.
His strategic dismantling of longtime nemesis, Manny Pacquiao, last May provided little to no evidence to dispute his claim and helped erase any doubts in the minds of boxing aficionados that Mayweather was at the very least TBG-The Best of this Generation.
Legendary Trainer and a member of the Boxing Hall of Fame, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, shared his opinion on where Floyd ranks among the current boxing landscape when he spoke with ESNEWS.
“He is a great fighter. He’s a fighter from another galaxy.” said the 76-year-old Beristain, who is best known for his work as the coach of Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez.
Beristain took his praise even further when pressed if there was anyone currently who could challenge the 39-year-old Mayweather, specifically the prospect of welterweights Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman dethroning the former number one pound for pound champion.
“For him, there isn’t a fighter right now that could beat him.” replied Beristain. “The only fighter who could tickle Mayweather right now is Crawford.”
Terence “Bud” Crawford (28-0, 20 KOs) is an undefeated, 2-time world champion, who may very well be boxing’s next big star but unfortunately due to boxing’s current political makeup, even if Mayweather were to return from retirement, the probability that Crawford would get a chance to “tickle” Floyd is highly unlikely.
Needless to say, Beristain speaks from experience having gone up against Mayweather in the corner of Juan Manuel Marquez back in 2009. Mayweather, coming back from a brief 21-month retirement, handed Marquez the most thorough defeat of his career connecting on an incredible 59% of his total punches compared to just 12% for Marquez.
