Bernard Hopkins: Garcia-Matthysse May Overshadow The Main Event

The year 2013, thus far, has treated us to some of the most competitive fights and stacked cards in recent history. Perhaps it’s the cold war between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank that’s led to this or perhaps we, as fight fans, are finally getting treated to what we deserve after so many years of ho-hum events.

I’d like to believe that it’s the latter, as Richard Schaefer alluded to in a conference call held a few weeks ago where he announced that Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse would fight on the Mayweather-Canelo undercard on September 14th.

Living legend Bernard Hopkins believes that, despite the fact that Matthysse is being seen as the early favorite, this fight is not a sure deal for either guy. “Anything can happen. This fight has a chance to overshadow the main event. It’s going to be a shoot-out.”

While Canelo and Mayweather’s fight is intriguing on many levels, the hard core boxing fans seem to be more excited about the light welterweight “co-main event”, as Hopkins labeled it.  The matchup has a rapidly rising star in Danny Garcia, who is coming off of a well-earned yet tough battle against veteran Zab Judah, against one of the most feared punchers in the game, in Lucas Matthysse.

The understated Argentine has been demolishing everyone in his path since his two disputed losses against Judah and Devon Alexander.  But Garcia is no slouch and those that believe otherwise should refer to his wins against Amir Khan, the former king (pun intended) at 140, and veteran Erik Morales.  His powerful left hook sent them both into a Dancing with the Stars routine, on the way to the canvas that would have made Maravilla Martinez proud.

For many, It’s considered the most exciting undercard in recent memory (we dare you to think of one better- believe me, we tried) and it’s also being pegged as the Mayweather sweepstakes, with the winner transforming into Floyd’s natural next opponent, were he to get by Canelo Alvarez.

When asked about the topic, Hopkins said “Oh yeah!” but quickly shifted gears to discuss Garcia-Matthysse again, something that we’ve seen happening a lot when the topic of September 14th comes up.

In closing, the always-passionate B-Hop added, “We’re going to see some different stuff early on from both fighters but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, when things go bonkers, it’s going be ‘bomb’s away.”
