“All it takes is just one fight and I am back in the conversation at welterweight” Andre Berto said Saturday in Union City, CA at Sports Authority as he surprised fans of Andre Ward by showing up to show support for the best super middleweight in the world autograph signing. Berto, who has been out of action since last July when he suffered a 12th round technical knockout loss to Jesus Soto-Karass in a fight Berto fought with a critical shoulder injury from round 2 onward. This was after Berto was just seconds away from knocking out Soto-Karass in the 11th round as well.

“I hope to be back in the ring at the end of August.” Berto said. As for the opponent he faces when he returns will no one has been named, but Berto did say that Robert Guerrero and Victor Ortiz are two fighters he would like to see in the not so distant future. As of the time of this article, Golden Boy Promotions has yet to announce a card at the end of the month of August. One might wonder that with Berto’s name power could he potentially end up on the undercard of the September Floyd Mayweather card which is also rumored to house Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook. If Berto was added we could potentially see a deep enough card to get Floyd a million PPV views if we get saw a Marcos Maidana rematch.

For Berto, a fighter HBO heavily invested in and was one of the first Al Haymon fighters to emerge on the scene, now needs a big win to prove that it was not a thing of the past his knockout victories over the likes of Freddy Hernandez in 2010. Berto, who is now training with Virgil Hunter, the longtime trainer of Andre Ward, looks to show the dramatic improvement another Hunter fighter, Amir Khan, showed in his second bout with the famed trainer.

A fan friendly fighter, who has only showed heart when put into the darkest reaches of the realm of the square circle may have seen criticism due to the feeling he was too entitled early on. Berto hopes to return and show that the past two fights have not been a reflection of his whole career , but simply two bad fights that he has reworked with in the gym.
