Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez - News ConferenceThings are starting to heat up recently over at Top Rank Inc. As we are closing in on the final quarter of the year, the boxing schedule is looking very promising with some very intriguing matchups coming down the pike such as Brandon Rios vs. Diego Chaves, Terence Crawford vs. Raymundo Beltran, Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri, and newly crowned WBC Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto is scheduled to return to the ring in December at the Madison Square Garden against an unnamed opponent as of yet.

One fight that was supposed to happen and was very close to being signed but never came to fruition is Gennady Golovkin vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. When asked if that fight could still happen in the future Arum responded, “Golovkin is a hell of a fighter and that fight would be very enticing, but I think now the priority is to do a title fight between Chavez and Carl Froch.” Arum feels confident that a fight between Chavez Jr. and Froch could happen in the early part of next year in Las Vegas. “I met with Chavez’ people and I think that they’re on board and I know Barry Hearn told me Carl Froch is on board.”

After his huge title winning effort over former WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, many people are wondering who Miguel Cotto’s opponent will be in December. “That’s what we’re going to be discussing this weekend with HBO. Yeah we want to make a fight in December for him in Madison Square Garden and if he is successful in that fight and if Canelo is successful this year in his last fight hopefully we can match them against each other next year,” Arum explained.

Since Canelo already has a PPV date scheduled in November, another big name that boxing fans have been calling for as a potential opponent for Cotto in December is the power punching Russian WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin. Arum doesn’t see that matchup happening this year. “I think the real problem is whether that late in December after Mayweather fights on PPV and Pacquiao fights on PPV, that there is enough money around to make it worthwhile to do a Cotto-Golovkin.”
