There is a time in every sport were one has to accept many of the greats we have learned to love are not going to be around for long, and in doing so we take a look at those who are ready to come and take the torch. Here I point out a handful of fighters whom I believe to be amongst the sports elite, or at least feature on the P4P list at some point. This is not an exhaustible list but just a brief idea of a few faces who will be occupying the limelight left by the likes if Maywether, Pacquiao and Hopkins.
1. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (40-0-1): The 21 year-old Mexican WBC Light-Middleweight Champ need not necessarily be mentioned as he has already caught many if our imaginations. Regardless I believe he should be as out of all active boxers I predict Canelo will be the one who takes the world by storm. At the tender age of 21 he already has a world title and an undefeated record consisting of 40 wins. He has not quite yet got to his peak whereby he is the guy to beat or on the pound for pound list but he will soon break onto this and when he does I see no turning back on his part. In my opinion i see him moving up to middleweight at some point and dominating for a lengthy period, matching the heights of the likes of Carlos Monzon and Julio Cesar Chavez.
2. Adrien Broner (23-0) As far as skill-sets go, the 22 year-old Ohio-based Broner has the flair and potential worth Looking foreword to. Already WBO champion at Super Featherweight, Up to now Broner’s record consists of an impressive 19 knockouts. He has completely outclassed all his opponents, besides in his bout against Mexican slugger Ponce De Leon, one which many see as a controversial decision which went Broner’s way. However, even the likes if Floyd Maywether Jr.. Have fights like his first against Jose Luis Castillo and I would not hold this against Broner too much when assessing his future. Like Canelo, I see Broner to dominate the pound for pound rankings for several years, in doing so I predict multiple titles at different weight classes, possibly stopping at the light-welter or Welterweight division.
3.Deontay Wilder (22-0) The 26 year-old Alabama based Olympic bronze medalist is an exciting Heavyweight who’s record up to now can be said to surpass that of Mike Tyson in his early bouts. He has up to now achieved an outstanding 100% K.O record, albeit against clearly outmatched opposition but this is even more impressive when you take into account the fact that 18 of his fights have been won in the first two rounds. Wilder has a very small frame as for a six ft seven fighter he weighs in at around 215. Due to his early stoppages we have not yet seen much of his skill set tested but what he does posses is a good long jab and a devastating straight right. I see him holding a title post-Kitschko’s for certain but to what extent he dominates is debatable as there are many other worthy candidates who will attempt to stop him. What will be interesting is to pit him against someone who will not fall to his punches so easily and therefore will make him have to get in the trenches, only then can we see what he is truly made of as a fighter.
4. George Groves (14-0) London-based Super-middleweight George Groves name became notice much more when he upset our gold medalist James DeGaule in their bout. Despite this he demonstrated good skills an impressive knockout power before this win. He is still a 14 fight novice and at 24 has a long way to go but if he continues the path he is on then there is very little chance he will not win a world title if not more. As the British and commonwealth champion he already was set to have a world title bout against WBO champ Robert Stieglitz, which unfortunately fell through for him. This Is a shame but should not concern Groves too much as he has a great career ahead of him and will receive a much deserved title shot at some point in the future.
5. Thomas oosthuizen (19-0-1) The 24 year old South African has already put himself just beneath the top-tier super-middleweights on the rankings. As the current IBO title holder he is yet to win a major title but is surely on target to do so in the coming years. His freak physicality appears very difficult for his opponents to handle, he is six foot four which is unheard of as far as super-middleweights are concerned. He has yet to fight many top contenders on the world levels but has strung together wins against Aaron Pryor Jr. and Saul Roman. Moving forward in his career he should look to fight the best contenders the division has to offer to make himself the #1 contender for themajor titles, which will lead to bigger money and bigger bouts for him down the line. As of yet all looks well for the unconventional South African.
