Broner Challenges Khan: “Anybody Can Get It, Mexi-CAN, Afri-CAN, Paki-STAN”

Adrien Broner-Amir KhanAdrien Broner has publicly challenged Amir Khan on Instagram, and I can’t help but revel in the irony. Amir Khan seems to have been calling out every big name in boxing yet the only guy that seems to have any interest in getting into the ring with him is a guy that he hasn’t challenged; Mr. Adrien “The Problem” Broner!

I admit I am being a bit facetious here but the whole Amir Khan approach to making fights has been a little sad to me, so it’s nice to see someone trolling him, in the same way. Khan reminds me of that kid in the neighborhood that no one wants to play with yet never gets the hint. So here you go, Amir… someone actually wants to play with you!

“No disrespect to Virgil Hunter he is a great coach and I got endless love for him but me and Amir Khan can fight at the end of this month I haven’t taken any punishment I’m back in the gym and ready to make a fool out of anybody #AboutBillions #ABonNBC”

Okay, so is this fight actually possible? Broner plans on fighting in Ohio on June 20th, and Amir Khan has nothing on his dance card at the moment. That works. Khan seems pretty desperate to make a fight with a top name in the sport, so he may say okay with fighting in Broner’s hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Lastly, they are both handled by his lordship Al Haymon. There are no rival promoters involved, and they can expect proper exposure via the PBC brand. All of this makes it very possible!

About that weight though…

The major obstacle would be weight. Khan has settled in nicely at welterweight. It seems like 147 is the right weight for him and most would advise against him screwing around at lower weights. Shedding 7 pounds will do no favors for his ability to take a punch.

Meanwhile, everyone agrees that Broner is a 140 pound fighter that has no business being at 147. In his two fights at welterweight, he had a way too close fight with light punching Paulie Malignaggi and then was handed his first loss by Maidana.

Well… let’s not ignore who we are dealing with here. Broner couldn’t even make 140 this weekend, so he would probably welcome a catch weight. PBC certainly doesn’t seem to be a slave to boxing tradition, so that is a very real possibility.

The real key to making this fight happen is Khan and his wonderfully delusional mindset. The guy is so blinded by self-confidence that he might do whatever it takes to fight a guy with a “name”, regardless of how bad it is for him. His desperation to be associated with other “big names” in boxing makes this fight more realistic than any other factor.

Who knows. Both guys are enigmas. I would love to see this fight happen, and I give the edge to Khan if he can make it at 144 or higher.
