Adrien “The Problem” Broner ( 26-0 22KOs ) has shown that he does not lack confidence. Broner will relish the opportunity to replace Mayweather at the top of the sport when the ‘Pound for Pound King’ steps down. His biggest test to date comes this Saturday at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, against current WBA Welterweight Champion, Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (32-4 7KOs ).
Broner is coming off an impressive 5th round stoppage against Lightweight Gavin Rees. Many have said that Broner played it safe in choosing to fight Malignaggi who only has seven knockouts his entire career and lacks a powerful punch. Broner replied to his critics by saying “I only fight who they put in front of me”. When asked what Broner feels Malignaggi skills are, he stated, “…(Malignaggi) has great talent.. He’s a great commentator.”
Broner has made it clear he feels that nothing has changed in Malignaggi’s fight game, and that he is the same fighter that fought Miguel Cotto in his prime. Broner stated, “If you are not on your “A” game against Paulie, he can slip away from you.” and “… at the end of the day Paulie is going to fight the same, I don’t study no tape. I don’t care what he brings, but whatever he comes to do Saturday night we will be equipped and ready”. Broner is moving up two weight divisions to battle the champion but doesn’t have concerns about his new Welterweight opposition, saying, and “The bigger they are the harder they fall”.
What does the future hold for Adrien “The Problem” Broner? Should Broner get past Malignaggi, he stated “I’m going to let the fans pick Adrien Broner’s next opponent”. Broner sees the fight with Malignaggi as his first step to fight as a Pay-Per-View attraction and feels he’s ready to face the top fighters in the division. Broner has stated that should a PPV fight transpire, Pacquiao and Marquez would be fighters he would like to face. Broner even stated that he would not mind giving Robert Guerrero, “Another ass whooping”.
With the fight less than a week away, Broner seems calm and ready to prove his critics wrong. Whether you believe Broner handpicked Malignaggi because he is the weakest champion at Welterweight, it’s still going to be Broner’s biggest step up in both weight and opposition.
