Ricky Burns goes into his fight this weekend against a man who really believes that it is his time to rip away Burn’s world title.

Burns faces 32 year old Mexican Raymundo Beltran in Glasgow on Saturday. Beltran has had a very tough life in which he lived in poverty and started working aged 5. Beltran believes that such experiences have given him what he needs to make it at the top.

Beltran had to turn to boxing to make something of himself in life and believes that his tough journey will stand him in good stead come Saturday.

Beltran, a Manny Pacquiao sparring partner for years now goes into the fight with a record of 28 wins and 6 losses. To be perfectly honest,  this isn’t the most impressive of records especially in comparison to Burns 36 wins and 2 losses.

Beltran is a better boxer than his record suggests with a few fights going against him when they could easily have been given to him. His record seems like that of a journeyman boxer who is just put out to be beaten by the better fighters but to test them. Beltran is a lot more than a journeyman and is a legitimate threat to Burns.

Beltran put his name back into contention in 2012 with a win over Henry Lundy and is deserving of his shot at the title this weekend.

The champion Burns will come into this fight determined to put on a show following his sluggish display against Gonzalez last time out. It was Burns’ first time fighting under new promoter Eddie Hearn and he will want to repay the faith shown in him with a big performance.

Burns is for me one of the most underrated boxers out there and doesn’t get the credit and plaudits that he deserves as a two-weight world champion. He has fantastic determination and self-belief and may not be the most explosive of fighters but always finds a way to get the job done.

He is a fantastic, modest young boxer who has come back from early defeats in his career to go on and reach the top of the sport.

Burns has recently become a father and some may suggest that this will have interrupted and disturbed his preparations for this fight but I disagree. Burns is the type of man that will actually have been improved by the birth of his child. He will be even more determined to win as a memento to his child.

From a technical point of view, Burns is a fighter who possesses good footwork and looks to land combinations and then get back out of trouble. Beltran in comparison is a fighter who looks to heap on the pressure and come forward.

Standing at 5ft 10 and with a reach of 70 inches, Burns possess the natural advantages over the shorter man and should look to utilize his jab to keep Beltran at distance.

I am expecting a really good fight here with 2 really determined lightweights going at it. I am predicting Burns to come through this fight via a unanimous decision and March on to a unification fight in the future against Vasquez. Burns is a truly underrated fighter and for me will prove yet again just how good he is.
