In recent months Canadian prospect Rob Nichols has become more and more frustrated being unable to land a fight to keep busy. Nichols was originally going to fight on the Double Jeopardy card that took place on May 31st here in Edmonton, Alberta. He was unable to compete on the card due to Nichols being a free agent and contractual obligations that KO Boxing promotions had with its fighters.

Earlier this year Nichols fought on a card from KO at heavyweight against Robert Kilkenny winning by a second round KO. Nichols was then promised that he would not have to fight at heavyweight any longer and that he would be fighting at cruiserweight, his natural weight.

On June 12th Nichols was glad to announce that September 13th he will be returning to the ring for a shot at the Canadian cruiserweight title possibly. The possible opponent is “Stumpy” Jamie Walton. “There have yet to be any confirmations, any contracts, but this is what has been indicated to me so far and this is what I’ll be preparing myself for come September 13th. Regardless is I don’t get Stumpy, I will be ready for anyone they find me in the Cruiserweight division that I want to make my permanent home in,” said Nichols.

Fighting at Cruiserweight has been a long time coming for Nichols who has been forced to take on heavyweights due to a lack of cruiserweights willing to face him. “I’ve proven I’m not afraid of challenging situations, having taken fights with much bigger opponents that have outweighed me by as much as 86lbs. I look at future fights in the Cruiserweight division with great anticipation. I figure if I have a more level playing field in which to compete, to what levels can I take my current success in the ring? If given adequate support for my pugilistic endeavors, what more am I capable of accomplishing? I’ve gotten this far with the help of my training partners, my coach and my family and friends, but who can help bring me forward in the next step of my career. Anyone that knows me is fully aware of not only my physical capabilities, but the character and mental fortitude that is required to be successful not only in this sport but in life in general.”

Finding opponents is not the only struggle that Nichols faces. Being a free agent there is no one looking out for him but himself and his team and is currently seeking sponsors. “I want to make a lasting impression as I have yet to find a sponsor to help me with my boxing career that I feel has a lot of potential for not only this year, but years to come.”

Even though he is not as active as he wishes to be he is still content that he is fighting.
