Saul Canelo AlvarezTwo of boxing’s hottest names put on tremendous shows in back to back weeks on HBO’s Boxing After Dark which may lead up to a potential match up that would produce fireworks in the near future.

Last week Saul “Canelo” Alvarez took on James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland in what would be a test of will and fortitude. Kirkland possessed punching power that Alvarez had not yet seen in his career, and he took it well and walked away with an incredible stoppage victory where he outsmarted and battered Kirkland. After Alvarez’ victory, he was asked by HBO’s Max Kellerman about the potential matchup against Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin. While Alvarez is fully ready for the possible fight against Cotto he has shown that he welcomes a bout with Golovkin in the future.

Last night (May 16th) Golovkin took on Willie Monroe Jr. and continued his knockout streak but didn’t do so going untouched. Monroe was able to land several shots on Golovkin who stated after the fight that he wanted the fight to last longer and allowed it to continue to give the fans a show. Golovkin also stated that he is ready for a showdown with Cotto or Alvarez but here and now.

The chances of Alvarez-Golovkin happening this year is less than likely as Cotto would more than likely be the next opponent for Alvarez. Alvarez has made it clear, especially after Golovkin’s fight last night that if he does move up to 160 it will be to face the best in the division but he sees no competition at that weight.

“The day I go up to 160 pounds I will face the best there is at that weight and I honestly and humbly see no competition at that weight,” said Alvarez via Twitter.
