Canelo vs Kirkland press conferenceCanelo Alvarez has begun preparations for his fight with James Kirkland in California. Of course Canelo would have preferred a fight with Miguel Cotto, but the fight never was agreed upon. Canelo then resorted to Plan B in James Kirkland. Kirkland is a dangerous opponent and knows he can’t be underestimated especially because Canelo wants another crack at the pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. before he retires.

“Hopefully we can get the Mayweather rematch down the line,” Canelo told ESPN Deportes. “The weight affected me the first time. I did learn a lot in that fight. We got experience from that fight. I always try to look at the positives in things. But I know I’m not going to fight in a weight class that’s not mine anymore.”

Mayweather, like Canelo, has a big fight on his hand a week before in May against Manny Pacquiao. Canelo, like us, is a fan is excited to see that fight happening but says it may be passed it’s peek date.

“The fight would have been bigger and better maybe if it happened a few years ago,” explained Canelo. “But the fight is happening and it’s still important to the credibility of boxing. But for the respect to the fans it should have happened years ago but it’s happening now, so this is where we are.”

Regarding his opponent, Canelo knows he is in for a dog fight.

“James Kirkland is dangerous. He hits hard. That’s why we picked this fight because it’s going to be a great fight. He knows how to cut off the ring and has faced many styles, so it would serve me right to adjust quickly. It’s going to be a great fight.”
