News out of Mexico is saying that a possible Canelo Alvarez-James Kirkland bout could finalize by Friday. It was only a few days ago that Canelo Alvarez held true to his deadline with Miguel Cotto and said he was moving on. Just days later the rumors were rampant about a fight taking place in San Antonio Texas on May 2nd featuring Canelo Alvarez, with James Kirkland as his opponent on regular HBO.

Many felt that news could have been a scare tactic to the triangle that is Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao.

A source told ESPN Deportes that the deal could be finalized by Friday.

“James Kirkland is the frontrunner for Canelo but there are other options. But if things go well, we are talking about Canelo’s return to Texas on a traditional Mexican date,” said the source. “I think Friday could be the date to finalize everything, but you know with James Kirkland, you never know.”

Canelo has spent most of the last quarter trying to negotiate a mega fight with Miguel Cotto. With the news of Mayweather-Pacquiao possibility being at a stall, Miguel Cotto is deciding to wait it out to possible land a rematch with Mayweather. Canelo would not wait any longer. However, we do not know what this means. If Mayweather-Pacquiao is signed and finalized, because all signals point to that fight being on May 2nd in Las Vegas on the same date.

Kirkland has been missing in action since his knockout of Glen Tapia in 2013. He was offered the Canelo fight before but turned it down. Kirkland was recently offered a fight with Gabriel Rosado with the winner having a heads up to landing a Canelo bout, but he turned that down as well. It is like the report states, with James Kirkland, “You never know.”
