Carl FramptonCarl Frampton made shocking news when he told the world he would be signing with Al Haymon. Now Haymon has Frampton slated for his U.S. debut on July 18th against unranked Alejandro Luna in Texas.

“I want to become a star in the USA and this is my first step on that journey,” said Frampton in a press release. “Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. is a dangerous challenger but he has never fought anyone like me and on July 18 he is in for a big, big shock. I feel I am the best junior featherweight in the world, and I am excited to box in front of a huge television audience in the USA.”

Frampton’s manager Barry McGuigan added, “This is fantastic news for Carl Frampton. He is defending his title live on CBS in the USA, and I believe Carl’s all action style will captivate the US fight fans. “He is an exceptional fighter with a brilliant personality. Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. is a hungry and dangerous young boxer who will be traveling to El Paso to rip that belt from Frampton. This is going to be a cracking fight.”

This is certainly a step back for Frampton, and the location of Texas seems off. Frampton, who is used to packing stadiums in Ireland, will likely be fighting with a smaller live crowd in front of him in Texas.

BoxingScene.com is reporting that the bout will be a CBS televised event.

Undefeated Jermall Charlo was scheduled to fight IBF junior-middleweight titleholder Cornelius Bundrage, but he suffered a cut in sparring, and now the fight has been called off.

The site is also reporting that it will be a day/night doubleheader of some sort with Chavez Jr. fighting in the same arena in the evening. So in the afternoon, you get the Frampton headlined bout on CBS and then tune into the Chavez Jr. fight that will be televised by Showtime in the evening.
