Carl+FramptonCarl Frampton successfully defended his IBF super bantamweight title tonight at his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The 28-year old champion scored a fifth round stoppage victory over mandatory challenger Chris Avalos.

In an absolutely amazing atmosphere, Frampton started very strong beating his American opponent to the punch. Avalos hurt his right arm at the end of the second during a clinch and turned his back to the champion. Frampton tried to take advantage of the moment, by jumping all over his opponent. But Avalos was saved by the bell.

Avalos’ arm seemed all right at the start of the third round, but Frampton continued his onslaught on the challenger. The Belfast man used his incredible offensive arsenal and stunned Avalos several times.

The fourth round continued where the third ended. Avalos had no answers for the champion’s offense and every time the American went on the offense; he got countered. In terms of both hand speed and accuracy, the gap between the two fighters was too big for the fight to be competitive.

In the fifth round, Frampton put an even worse beating on his opponent, sending his opponent to the ropes. Avalos went down, but the referee called it a slip. But only 30 seconds later, Frampton was all over the 25-year old American again.

The referee stopped the fight after 1 minute and 33 seconds of the fifth round with Avalos seemingly out on his feet. With this victory, Frampton improved his record to 20-0 (14KO’s) while Avalos record drops to 25-3 (19KO’s).

After the fight, Frampton admitted that it was an easy night for him. His manager and promoter Barry McGuigan joined the jubilation.

“Frampton is the best super bantamweight in the world right now. That includes Scott Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz, and Guillermo Rigondeaux”, McGuigan told ITV reporters.

Frampton of course was asked about a potential showdown with Scott Quigg, who was ringside during the fight.

“I would love it,” the champion said. “I think Scott wants it. It is a huge fight this summer, but Scott needs to remember who the real champion is. I would leave Belfast for that fight.

The WBA regular super bantamweight champion joined the conversation.

“Let’s make it happen, Quigg said. Don’t matter where the fight is. He draws big crowds in Belfast; I draw big crowds in the UK. Wherever it does the most. The real champion will be determined that night.”

Sounds like all parties want the fight for this summer, which should rival Kell Brook vs. Amir Khan for biggest British fight of the year.

Earlier tonight, Viktor Plotnykov scored a unanimous decision victory over Denton Vassell improving his record to 32-2 (15KO’s).
