chavez jrThe return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is due for Saturday. It’s been over a year since the son of a legend has been in the ring. Now moving onwards from the Middleweight division into either the Super Middleweight division or Light Heavyweight, Chavez Jr. is just happy to be back.

“I feel good because I have a fight,” Chavez told ThaBoxingVoice.com “I know he’s a tough opponent, but I need to come back with an opponent like that. I don’t like to take an easy fight because it doesn’t give me motivation to train hard. This fighter, people inside of boxing know how good he is.”

It’s hard to be the son of a legend and not hear about comparisons to your old man, especially when your father tells the world that you have more tools than he did. But to Jr., he is still set on building a legacy of his own which he feels won’t come close to his father’s.

“I think I’ll never be a better fighter than my father. I never broke any records, 90-0 and 38 championship bouts but I have my own abilities, and I think I’m doing good and first I need to win April 18th, “ said Chavez Jr.

The fighter recently made a trainer change to veteran corner man Joe Goossen and said that the relationship is working well.

“It’s good because I like to win the fights and I think I have a very good team,” explained Chavez Jr. “I like Goossen because it’s a very smart corner. I’m 180 right now I don’t think I’ll have problems making 172. I have a year off and you never know how your body responds to training.”

A win over Fonfara means big fights, and Chavez Jr. wanted to clarify where those big fights would lie.

“This is the names. Everybody likes the names. I need to win this fight for fights like Froch, Golovkin fights, and other big fights at 168.”
