Saul Canelo Alvarez Chepo Reynoso The second biggest fight to make in boxing between Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto has not happened yet. Whether it be because Cotto didn’t want to rush into making a decision or because Cotto wanted to move to Roc Nation Sports as he did, the fight is not viable yet. Canelo is fighting Kirkland on May 9th, and Cotto is still looking to finalize an opponent for June. HBO has told Cotto and his team that if they want his fight televised on their air in June, it has to come with a guarantee that he fights Canelo during the second half of the year.

Canelo and his team still want the fight to happen this year.

“Well remember last year, we made an attempt to fight Cotto because it’s the fight people want to see,’ Canelo’s trainer Chepo Reynoso told FightHype.com. “It’s a fight people are interested to see because it’s an attractive fight. On our part, we put in our all to try and make this fight. We lasted more than two months trying to negotiate. Cotto procrastinated in the end, and the fight didn’t happen. Cotto didn’t want to, but we made every intent because we want the people to see great fights. “

Reynoso doesn’t feel like Cotto was afraid of the fight but maybe didn’t see it as being good for his business at the time.

“I don’t think he was scared,” Reynoso said. “I think they see the business, and maybe the business wasn’t attractive to them. But I think right now it’s one of the most attractive fights and it’s the best business Cotto can have. But he didn’t consider it that way, so that’s on him. We continue to move forward, and that’s all we can do.”

The other middleweight name aside from Cotto is Gennady Golovkin. Right now, Canelo is fighting at 154 with rumors swirling that 154 is not makeable anymore and a move to middleweight being imminent. Reynoso was asked about Golovkin and said, “I think he’s a strong fighter that we know very well. He’s going through a great moment, and people will say what they say. But the truth is Golovkin is beating whoever they put in front of him. If they are good or bad, it’s not Golovkin’s fault, he just wins.
