Katie Taylor was awarded female fighter of the year for the second year in a row by The Ring Magazine. The decision has garnered an abundance of praise and some skepticism but that’s life in boxing.
Claressa Shields, who many view as the top fighter in women’s boxing, has no gripe with Taylor winning the award and sent a congratulations Taylor’s way.
“Well earned this year. Congrats Katie Taylor,” Tweeted Shields.
A fan asked why Shields did not get the honor this year after capturing a title in a third division early on in 2020 and the answer was simple.
“I only boxed 1 time this year. Wasn’t what I planned my year to be like but that’s the truth behind it. Next year I’ll have more fights.”
