Miguel Cotto and Freddie RoachBarclays Center, Brooklyn, New York-Miguel Cotto has credited Freddie Roach with the resurgence of his career.

In 2012, Cotto lost two bouts, one against Floyd Mayweather, which in defeat he showed a good account for himself against the best fighter in the world. The second loss in 2012 came against Austin Trout, which many thought could signal the end of the Puerto Rican’s superstar’s career.

Cotto had trainers from his uncle Evangelista Cotto to Emmanuel Steward to Cuba’s Pedro Diaz, who had trained him in the last fight.

Cotto, who was seemingly looking for other answers, went to one of the most world renowned trainers in the game in Freddie Roach. It has been magic ever since. Cotto destroyed Delvin Rodriguez in his comeback fight in 2013.

In 2014, Cotto destroyed Sergio Martinez winning the WBC middleweight champion Last night, he destroyed Daniel Geale to retain his title.

Next up it’s likely Canelo Alvarez. It’s a fight his coach Freddie Roach feels his fighter can do well in.

“I think so, I’ve thought about that fight a lot, Roach told the media after the fight between Cotto and Geale. “I watched a lot of tape on Canelo Alvarez. I thought the fight would happen sooner than it is. I think it’s a great fight for us. I will Miguel ready for the fight. I feel we will win that fight.”

Last night, Cotto was on the offensive, landing left hooks, stiff left jabs, and strong overhand rights. But what there also was a fast Miguel Cotto on his feet. Cotto moved well and avoided many of Geale’s shots. Roach is known as an offensive fighter but last night, Cotto showed multiple facets of Roach’s training.

“I like offense, but I know defense. I have the perfect student with Miguel. We worked really hard for this fight, and it showed.”
