Earlier in 2015, a big void was left in one of the hottest divisions in the sport of boxing when unified super lightweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0 18KO’s) decided to vacate his world title belts in order to move up to the welterweight division.
Back in April of this year, former lightweight titleholder Terence Crawford (27-0 19KO’s) moved up and won the vacant WBO super lightweight title against lower tier contender Thomas Dulorme.
This past October, Viktor Postol faced off against hard punching Lucas Matthysse for the vacant WBC super lightweight title which was vacated by Danny Garcia earlier in the year. In that fight, Postol managed to pull off what was viewed as an upset by most fans and finished off Matthysse in the 10th round of their exciting fight. It turned out to be a sensational, career-defining performance for the tall Ukrainian.
In my opinion, Postol’s knockout win over Matthysse for the WBC world title eclipses anything Terence Crawford has accomplished in the super lightweight division. Crawford simply doesn’t have any wins over true world class opposition at super lightweight with his best win arguably being over Thomas Dulorme who was once a highly touted prospect but nothing more.
Yet, I hear fans and media talk about a potential Pacquiao v Crawford showdown as if Crawford has in fact cleaned out the super lightweight division and doesn’t have any viable options left. Why haven’t I heard fans talk about or wanting to see a potential Pacquiao v Postol fight instead? After all, Postol has accomplished more at super lightweight then Crawford has.
Better yet, why aren’t people clamoring for a potential Postol v Crawford fight? Both fighters have the same promoter in Top Rank and both hold world titles in the same division and both are currently undefeated. There is no reason why this fight can’t be made and it’s the fight fans should be asking for since it’s two undefeated world class fighters who hold titles in the same division.
Style wise, Postol possesses serious problems for Crawford so I can see why Top Rank would be hesitant about making this fight, however, I don’t understand why the fans haven’t been talking about this potential matchup. Hopefully, this will be the first step in sparking the talk and demand for this fight, which will then increase because it would be truly tragic for this fight not to ever happen.
