Curtis Stevens has become the subject of criticism this weekend after he had called for a fight with Gennady Golovkin then turning down the fight.
When Stevens challenged Golovkin he was sure of himself and stated no terms, he just wanted the opportunity. “I’m ready right now. If it was up to me, I’d fight a champion right now. But the question is, do they want to give me a shot? I’m high risk. Nobody wants to get in there and get hit by me. If it was up to me, I’d fight Gennady Golovkin because he’s the most feared middleweight. I’m calling him out. People are scared to fight him, I’m asking to fight him,” said Stevens.
Stevens received an offer to face Golovkin after he had won via first round KO over Saul Roman on August 3rd. In the offer, Stevens would fight in his own hometown for $300,000 which is what Golovkin’s last opponent received. Stevens promoter Main Events turned down the offer.
“Curtis Stevens very badly want to fight Gennady Golovkin. It’s our job to make sure he is paid appropriately to fight the toughest guy in the division,” said Main Events via their Twitter account.
Stevens defended his promoters decision to turn down the fight stating, “I’m like a muther fucka on trial. You never take the first offer.”
Fans have taken to social media to express their outrage with the fighter after he had said that he would fight Golovkin for free and it seems that Stevens is really enjoying the attention he is getting which he may be able to use as a bargaining chip in negotiations. Surely $300,000 is not a small amount especially because he is a fighter that people have begged for Golovkin to face.
“I fight! Let my promoters do their job,” said Stevens.
