Daniel Ponce De Leon (48-5, 35 KO’s) is ready to move onward in his career after his TKO loss to his friend Abner Mares last May in which he lost his world title. Where does he go? Up in weight of course to take on untested prospect Garry Russell Jr.(20-0, 12 KO’s) pending Russell’s approval and his willingness to move up as well since he fights at 126 pounds..
“I’m ready. The bitterness from defeat is over and I must move forward and keep training,” said Ponce de Leon. “I was offered Gay Russell Jr. and I want that fight but at 130 pounds. I will be fighting on September 7th, just a week before Canelo’s fight. I hope Russell takes the fight. I already accepted it. Golden Boy wants the fight. The television network (Showtime) wants it and now it’s up to him.”
Even though Russell is a highly touted prospect he has yet to face legit competition and is untested. Ponce de Leon would be considered his first legitimate test and if he feels confident from what Mares was able to do he will be in for a long night since Ponce de Leon has a strong chin and Russell lacks power in his punches.
With Golden Boy wanting the fight Russell is more than likely to accept but Ponce de Leon better hope they are not planning on using him the way he was used against Adrien Broner.
Should the fight happen it will take place in El Paso, Texas.
