Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse is a fight that will not only be a show stealer come September 14th but it will be a battle in which wills are tested and careers will be made.
Before the fight was signed there were many obstacles that could of stopped the fight and one that may still cause the bout to not happen.
Drug testing. It is a very big issue in the world of sports and although every athlete says that they are clean it is not necessarily true.
Danny Garcia and his father Angel Garcia are adamant about getting Danny’s opponent Lucas Matthysse to partake in random drug testing but one of the main issues is where Matthysse trains, in his native Argentina, USADA and VADA have no jurisdiction to test Matthysse. They do, however have affiliates that can test Matthysse on their behalf but still leaves some cause for concern with the Garcia’s.
Angel Garcia is one of the most outspoken figures in boxing today. To say he is confident is an understatement and his ego is possibly bigger than that of a Hollywood star. When it comes to his son, he has no worries because he feels that Danny was destined for greatness since he was a small child.
“Danny is not a made champion. This was a vision giving to me [by God] when he was a child. It’s not something that was made up. That’s why I believe in Danny. That’s why i know what Danny can do and he is going to destroy Matthysse on September 14th,” said Angel. “I don’t worry about Matthysse. My job is not Matthysse. That’s for his trainer, that meatball. That’s the meatballs job, not mine. My job is Danny. I don’t worry about Matthysse, what they do, how they run, that’s none of my business. My Job is Danny. The thing is this, I keep telling you guys this, Danny was made, Danny was born to be a fighter. That’s all he knows how to do is fight. He don’t know how to do nothing else. ”
Even though drug testing has been agreed to by both fighters, Angel still seems suspicious about Matthysse and his career.
“They are holding it [training camp] in Argentina. I make sure that there is [anti] doping going on. Make sure he gets tested. I don’t give a fuck if it’s in Jamaica, Hong Kong, China. He is gonna get tested. He a’int won nothing. He had a chance to win the God damned belt, the IBF. He had the chance to win that belt from Peterson, ask him why he didn’t fight for that belt! We could of had that belt right now too! We would of had that belt on September 14th!”
Garcia’s suspicion about Matthysse increased even more with Matthysse’s last fight against Lamont Peterson which was originally supposed to be for Peterson’s 140 pound IBF title but a catch-weight of 141 pounds that was negotiated for the fight meant the title would not be on the line.
“Ask him why he did not fight for the IBF at 140,” said Angel.
Danny, on the other hand is a calmer version of his father. He is familiar with the testing and protocol and he is standing by the request for testing.
“Every fight I always do the test since I beat Morales the first time. It’s a little later than usual to be starting. I don’t know why somebody did not sign the paper in time but you know it’s my time. Protocol is when I get tested he gets tested. If there ain’t no test, there ain’t no fight.”
