Both men were face to face last week in Texas and appeared to be already in good shape. For the past three years, Canelo has taken fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo, and now James Kirkland. You’d be hard pressed to find any other boxer with a list like that in the past couple of years.

Canelo has proven he is willing to make the best fights and tried doing so before this Kirkland fight against one Miguel Cotto. When that fight didn’t come to pasture, he took the next best thing in James Kirkland. De La Hoya feels it’s a dangerous fight for both fighters, especially Canelo.

“It’s a dangerous, exciting, fun fight to watch,” explained De La Hoya. “There’s a reason why we sold close to 60,000 tickets in two days. There’s a reason why people want to see that fight because the fight’s going to be incredible. There’s a great package on HBO on May 9th between the re-airing of Pacquiao-Mayweather and then the main entrée of Canelo-Kirkland on HBO.”

Although Canelo wanted to be the one headlining on May 2nd, the traditional Mexican boxing holiday. Being the week after is a good consolation according to De La Hoya, especially because the fight can end all suddenly with an audience that just tuned into the Mayweather-Pacquiao replay.

You’re guaranteed to see a knockout; you’re guaranteed to see fireworks,” explained De La Hoya. “You know one punch can end it all. We know it’s a dangerous fight. We know Canelo wanted to fight Kirkland, so we’ll see on May 9th.”
