alg-oscar-de-la-hoya-jpgAlmost seven years ago, “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya  (39-6, 30 KO’s) stepped foot in a boxing ring for the last time as a fighter when he faced off against Filipino icon Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao. De La Hoya came into the fight drained and looked like a sick man. Pacquiao blew him out of the water and rose to stardom while the aged veteran knew it was time to call it quits.

De La Hoya didn’t leave boxing entirely, though. In 2002, De La Hoya started his own promotional company and called it Golden Boy Promotions. He, alongside some of his fellow boxers, was able to build one of the biggest and brightest promotional companies in boxing today.

Although De La Hoya retired from boxing, being around the sport and watching his fighters shine gave him that itch to give it one more try and return to the ring. De La Hoya showed particular interests in rematching Floyd “Money” Mayweather and most recently Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.. De La Hoya decided against the comeback and one of the newest additions to Golden Boy’s roster, David Lemieux, ended up facing Golovkin in a middleweight title unification bout.
Recently, De La Hoya was asked by ESNewsReporting.com if he would ever consider training fighters. The fact that he had already begun training a young fighter came as a shock, but the fighter he was training and the other trainer was even more shocking.
Oscar has a son named Devon that is sixteen years old. Oscar has been working on developing Devon into a possible star in boxing and has been working alongside his former nemesis, now friend, “El Feroz” Fernando Vargas.
The two formal rivals began building a friendship late last year/early this year when De La Hoya invited Vargas to watch some fights. Shortly after, Golden Boy signed one of Vargas’ fighters, Cesar “The Great” Quiñonez, and they have been working together ever since.  The combination of having Oscar and Fernando teaching young Devon will do him good as he will learn how to box and how to bang in the ring. For Oscar, should everything go well, he may have found a new calling aside from promoting.
