Delvin Rodriguez has been a part of a fight of the year in 2011 and even in big fights on major networks. But on October 5th in Orlando, Florida, he will be in the fight to bolster the rest of his boxing life when he squares off against Miguel Cotto. Cotto is coming off back to back losses against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Austin Trout. So for Cotto this may be just another fight in his great career, for Rodriguez this could be his last shot to propel his boxing career to the top level.

This is the way I’m training; I’m looking at this at my last opportunity to make it big. I’m already motivated to fight a guy that’s a champion and fought everybody, so that’s motivated me and this being maybe one of my last shots is extra motivation,” Rodriguez told ThaBoxingVoice.com.

Rodriguez’ last two fights have ended in TKO’s. He destroyed George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah and came back late to decision Freddy Hernandez, which was later overturned to a stoppage victory when officials went back to the replay to show that the cut on Hernandez was caused by a punch and not an accidental head butt.  While he may have been dominant versus ‘Comanche Boy”, he looked like he was on his way to losing in the Hernandez fight. Rodriguez explained that he was out of that fight since the 3rd round.

“I got to tell you in that fight, I wasn’t in that fight. I was subconscious since the 3rd and I was just working off reaction and it was hard to tell from TV. After the head butt and hook in the 3rd round, I was out of it. I started catching my balance in the 6th, then after I started picking it up, I saw an opening throw in an overhand punch and I went for it. The referee didn’t warn him with the head-butts but I was out of it.”

Rodriguez last two fights were shown on ESPN2 and Rodriguez admitted that it was hard to get up for those fights. “I have been through so much in my career that these ESPN level fights don’t give me the motivation because I think I’m on a better level than those guys. But now this is the opportunity of my career and I know I’m not going to let it go because it’s probably my last,” stated Rodriguez.

This last shot could lead to another big shot for Rodriguez. It happened for Austin Trout who defeated Rodriguez and then went on to defeat Cotto. Cotto was in line to possibly have a mega showdown with Canelo Alvarez. That shot went to Austin Trout. Rodriguez has similar plans.

“My plan is the same thing. I’m focused on this fight, but I do have plans, beat Cotto and go to the bigger guys, go for Canelo-Mayweather, whoever wins.”
