Just about a month ago on July 6th Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade was supposed to be fight Zaurbek Baysangurov for the WBA Junior Middleweight title. Baysangurov unfortunately had to withdraw from the fight due to injury, leaving the title vacant. Instead the rising prospect will face Vanes Martirosyan for the title on September 7th at the Staples Center on the undercard of Chavez vs. Vera.
For Andrade it had to be a letdown to know that he was going to get his first title shot and then hearing the news that the fight was cancelled would be hard for any fighter, “It was a sad situation for me because I was willing to go all the way over to his hometown and take the (title) from him” said, Andrade.
As always when one door closes another opens. Now Andrade takes on a tougher opponent in Martirosyan and he understands the level of competition has risen. “He’s a good fighter, he made it to the Olympics,” Andrade stated on a recent episode of ThaBoxingVoice.
The fight with Andrade and Martirosyan had rumors circulating when the fight would take place and no one for a few weeks seemed to know if it would in fact happen at all. Now that the fight is set in stone Andrade is ready to showcase his skills. “I’m glad that I finally have a date and I’m ready to let the world know who the best 154 pounder is and that I’m one of the best fighters out there.”
Andrade has a tough task if he plans to defeat the undefeated Martirosyan but he understands the task at hand, stating, “It’s not going to be a walk in the park but it’s my time… this is not the guy who stops Demetrius Andrade.” Although Andrade is not taking his opponent lightly, he is confident that he has the superior ability and had this to say about Martirosyan. “He’s one dimensional and he doesn’t know how to switch it up.” He continued, “At the end of the day it’s going to be a “W” for me”.
In the last couple months Andrade went from having a title shot, then losing it, then having it back again but with all the ups and downs he is ready. “This is my time, this is what I worked hard for all my life,” said Andrade. “I’m going in there to be the superior fighter and I’m going to take over.”
In just a few weeks Andrade will have his chance to not only win his first world title but if he gets past Martirosyan , there is a long list of great Junior Middleweights to prove what he already feels… that he’s one of the best fighters in the world.
