If you speak to most people in the boxing world, there was something about Nonito Donaire’s last fight against Simpiwe Vetyeka that didn’t sit right with them. Whether it was the timeouts that Nonito Donaire called that were allowed by the referee Luis Pabon, or the inaccuracy in the scorecards at the start of round 5 read by the ring announcer, it just seems like there has to be a rematch. The bout was halted in the 5th round due to a head butt that cut Donaire in the 1st round.

Many will make the argument that the fight should have been stopped earlier causing a no contest and some boxing insiders feel that had Donaire not gotten the knockdown the bout would have continued because of the uncertainty in the decision. Credit to Donaire, who says he will grant Vetyeka a rematch.

TheBoxingVoice.com paid a visit to his trainer, Nonito Donaire Sr. in Oakland at his new gym and he disagreed with the notion.

“It was not really controversial,” stated Donaire. Before that fight the officials gave us instructions if a fight ends in a head butt and it happens before the 4 rounds, it’s a no contest. If it happens to be stopped after 4 rounds, it will go to a decision. Where was the controversy? It was stopped after 5 and went to a decision.”

Donaire Sr. remains firm on that notion and also firm on his stance as the trainer of his son, Nonito Donaire Jr. They two will link up again for a fall fight with an opponent to be determined.

“We’re working together and he told me he was going to fight in October but we don’t know the exact date or who we’re going to fight, so we’re just waiting for that but it’s good to be back with Jr.”
