In an exclusive interview, Eddie “Eboy” Gomez talked to our very own Nestor Gibbs.

On June 6, Gomez fought Francisco Santana (20-3-1 9 KO) at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. In a shocker, Gomez (16-1 10 KO) lost a 10 round unanimous decision to Santana, taking his first professional defeat.

When asked when he was going to return to the ring, Gomez immediately thought about his daughter, who will be born around September. “Not until my daughter is born in September,” said Gomez. “After that I should be back in the ring no later than November.”

Despite taking a loss, Gomez does not want his next fight to be a, “walk in the park,” However, he would not mind having a rematch with Santana. “I would love a rematch if I get the opportunity,” said Gomez. “This time I feel like I want the rematch to be in New York.” Gomez, born and raised in the Bronx, felt that he was not treated fairly in California. “There was so much going on leading up to the fight,” said Gomez. “I felt like they were against me.”

Gomez admitted that some of the rounds could have gone either way. Santana caught Gomez with a hook in the 10th round that sent him off balance, but Gomez recovered to control the tempo. “I accept the loss,” said Gomez. “The judges saw it the other way.”

Gomez named Jesus Soto Karass as a potential candidate for a November bout. “That is perfect. He has fought many, many good fighters,” said Gomez. “He is right there in front of you the whole night.”

Gomez is going to be a dangerous man come his next fight. He is determined to avenge his first professional defeat. With the addition of a daughter, it should serve as an inspiration to continue working his way to the top of the boxing world.
