Winning the lottery in boxing within the last 10 years has meant landing a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Now that Mayweather is retired  Saul Alvarez has become the figurehead of boxing and if you want to make bank you get a fight with Canelo.

Canelo last fought against Sergey Kovalev in November of 2019 and has been inactive since.  There are several causes for the inactivity such as Covid and an ongoing lawsuit with his promoter Golden Boy Promotions and with the network DAZN with the latter two being the main reasons.

As of this morning (November 6th), it seems the Canelo lottery is once again open as his trainer Eddy Reynoso released a statement this morning via Twitter that Canelo is now a free agent:

“In my role as a manager and coach of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, I allow myself to communicate to the boxing community and to all our fans that starting today, November 6th, ‘Canelo’ becomes a free agent, so we are ready to continue with his boxing career. All this time we have been working very hard in the gym with a lot of responsibility and discipline, to be in great physical shape and ready to fight this year and it will be. We will announce the date, rival, and place very soon, and we will return stronger than ever to keep growing and showing that Mexican boxing is the best. Thank you!”

There are several opponents out there that would make for a great matchup and there is plenty of speculation that his next fight will more than likely to be made against someone under the Al Haymon banner.
