Eric Brown With Floyd Mayweather Jr(47-0, 26KO’s) posting videos of himself online engaging in exercises such as chopping wood and swimming -methods we have not seen him employ in any of the behind-the-scenes programmes that have preceded his fights over the latter stage of his career- trainer Eric Brown was asked by Fighthype.com what he made of the change ahead of Floyd’s most important outing to date; against Manny Pacquiao(57-5-2, 38KO’s) on May 2nd.

“Well, a lot of that is old school training you know. Fighter’s been doing that since boxing’s been in existence. Floyd’s a true champion; he’s a workaholic, what you call a ‘gym rat’. The guy’s always in the gym training, so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s working like this. This is a big fight.”

A lot has been made of these new additions to his training regime. Normally we see him jump rope, hit the heavy bag, the speed-bag and do his mitt-work with his Uncle Roger Mayweather. An impressive display of coordination and speed that is burned so acutely into both participants minds they can actually close their eyes in mid-flow. He sharpens his tools through repetition, an obsessive application to whatever task is at hand. He strives for perfection; that is why he is who he is.

So how much will swinging an axe and doing lengths in a pool really change what Floyd is able to produce come fight night? Probably not that much given he’s 38 years old and already a supremely conditioned athlete. These practices serve more as an indicator that Floyd is willing to go the extra mile for the biggest fight of his career, which can only be bad news for Manny Pacquiao.
