According to Stephen Espinoza the CEO of Showtime, De La Hoya had a verbal agreement to maintain Alvarez on his network. As days passed De La Hoya delivered the surprising announcement of Alvarez’s official signing with HBO.
Mayweather told Fighthype.com, “Oscar De La Hoya has always been disloyal; very disloyal. He was very disloyal to Richard Schaefer. Richard Schaefer built that company from the ground up. I don’t have anything against Eric Gomez at all, but De La Hoya is a piece of sh*t. He is a snake.”
According to Boxingscene.com, Oscar De La Hoya retaliated with his own verbal assault. He discussed their previous clash in 2007 by stating, “It was a good close fight where the victory could have been given to me. One of the judges in the final round gave the round to Mayweather and that is why he won. The other two judges gave it to me. If I had been 28-years-old I would have won easy, knocked him out, but obviously age does not forgive me.”
Whether De La Hoya was angered by Mayweather’s recent comments is unknown. He could have just been giving his honest opinion after an interviewer asked him a particular question. Despite this it makes one wonder is it coincidence he said he would have knocked out Mayweather shortly after Mayweather’s statements. Whether the timing was intentional or not, this will probably rise the animosity between the two.
When two fighters have a feud amongst each other, it brings excitement. When two promoters have a feud amongst each other, it brings disgust. The last thing the sport of boxing needs is more promotional feuds that can possibly prevent fights. If Mayweather promotions stable increases, and we have an additional Al Haymon vs. Top Rank rivalry, fight fans will surely be on the short end of the stick once again.
