cotto-roachFreddie Roach laid out his plan for  WBC Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto. The six time BWAA (Boxing Writers Association of America) Trainer of the Year told reporters, while training Manny Pacquiao for his fight on Nov 22 against Chris Algieri, “I think Canelo Alvarez is obviously our number-one choice, and then I would love to go fight ‘Triple G’ after we win that fight,” said Roach. “Of course there’s Mayweather out there, he’s ducking Manny but he beat Cotto once and I don’t know if he wants to fight us but that’s a pretty interesting fight for me.”

With Canelo withdrawing from the Dec. 6 bout with Joshua Clottey, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya says that he will return May 2, 2015.

De La Hoya also expressed that Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are listed as possible opponents for Alvarez.
Gennady Golovkin (30-0,27) will face contender Marco Antonio Rubio this Saturday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California with the WBC title on the line. The winner of this fight will be the mandatory challenger for Cotto who won the belt by beating Sergio Martinez by 10th round TKO this past June.

“I would like one fight before that [facing Golovkin.] Obviously we do have a 160-pound title we have to defend and I think he’s the perfect opponent for us. Maybe the two best fighters in the world,” said Roach.
It seems like the stars are aligning for Roach’s plan to come to fruition.

Canelo doesn’t have a opponent for May, so if both parties are willing to come together an Alvarez vs. Cotto fight just may happen. Golovkin has to get past Rubio to be the mandatory challenger and if that happens then a mega fight between Cotto and Golovkin could be on the horizon of what is a talent rich middleweight division.
