The world still waits what Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao decide to do. As boxing fans wait, so does the rest of the boxing world as the rest of the dominos for 2015 fall in terms of making fights. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer is very optimistic about a possible mega fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.
“Mayweather right now it’s looking pretty good but it’s still up in the air,” Roach told ThaBoxingVoice.com. “I think it maybe has a long way to get through all the negotiations. I do hear there has been some communication so that’s a good sign. I think Manny fights his next fight at 140 unless we fight Mayweather. We fight Mayweather at 147 because that’s where the money is and that’s where the big fight is just like the Oscar fight. We’ll take that and put the weight on.’
If Pacquiao was to move down to 140, Roach eyed a potential big fight with Danny Garcia. But because of boxing politics, the fight will not likely happen.
“The weight we want him to be in his next fight is 140,” stated Roach. “I talked Danny Garcia for a while but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Garcia is with Al Haymon and since Al and Bob Arum don’t get along it makes for big fights not to happen. I like that fight because it’s an exciting fight for the fans. Manny wants to fight guys that will put on a good show. We can’t get him right now.”
Roach doesn’t think the up and down will make any big significance to Manny Pacquiao because he is comfortable at both 140 and 147.
“Putting weight on fighters is a little easier than taking weight off fighters, they get to eat a little but more,” explained Roach. “It’s more comfortable for them because they get to eat more but Manny is very comfortable at 140 also. So the thing is that’s why I asked for 144 for the Algieri fight because I wanted to see how he looked at the weight and he looked good in that performance. If Manny goes to 140, a lot of those 147 pound guys are going to come down to 140 because that’s where the money is.”
A potential opponent for Pacquiao at 140 is rising star Terence Crawford. Roach feels it would be too soon for Crawford to fight Pacquiao but definitely sees him as a potential opponent down the road.
“Crawford’s a good opponent,” stated Roach. “I think he needs a little more seasoning and a little more experience. I wouldn’t put him in there so soon right now. But down the line he’s going to be one of those guys for sure.”
