Molina hopes to win his way into a title shot

The sweet science is all about fighting styles, styles make fights right? It will be no different this Friday when Cory Spinks (39-7) squares off against Carlos Molina (20-5-2) in an IBF Junior Middleweight Eliminator for the number two spot. Both fighters are coming off disappointing loses. Spinks was recently knocked out by IBF champion Cornelius Bundrage for the second time and if he wins,  he could end up fighting Bundrage a third time.

Molina is coming back from a disqualification loss to James Kirkland. Molina’s corner man caused the DQ because he entered the ring during a count after Molina hit the canvas in the tenth round. Till that happened Molina was making Kirkland ineffective by smothering his punches. Wasn’t pleasing to the eye, but he was winning.

Now for my Bigger’s boxing prediction:  Cory Spinks will come out as the aggressive slickster he is, while Carlos Molina will be the crafty and defensive counter puncher. This clash of styles will make this a very interesting fight but also very hard to predict. However, the way Molina fights is NOT judge friendly. He has lost or drew a lot of close fights because of it, but he should be able to open up more against Spinks. Spinks being more aggressive will win him rounds regardless of who the judges are. Molina will have to be much more active and fan friendly to win this fight. To be honest, I see this ending in a draw but I hate predicting draws, so I will say Molina does just enough to pull out a close split decision victory.

This is a pretty stacked card which also features Jose Luis Castillo (64-11-1) against Antwone Smith (22-4-1) in a 10 round welterweight bout. Castillo is coming off a win over Ivan Popoca, who he left bloodied and battered.

Don “Da Bomb” George is also on the card, who is in process of moving down to middleweight, which l find a awesome fit for him. There are so many exciting fight combinations for George at 160, Gabriel Rosado, Brian Vera, Andy Lee, Golovkin, Quillin, you name it.

Mike “Hollywood” Jimenez, a friend and teammate of George will be joining him on the card. Jimenez is my own personally picked prospect. This kid has it all, the size, the skills, the speed, the power, and charisma. I expect him to go far. In his last fight, he whipped a sound veteran  n Antwun Echols by third round TKO. Come check him out and the rest of the card this Friday at the UIC Pavilion or tune in to Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 at 8pm central.
