Carl FrochFormer super-middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s), who hasn’t fought since stopping George Groves at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 screaming fans last May, is likely going to hang up the gloves, according to promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

The Nottingham fighter has contemplated retirement over the past year or so but has also toyed with the idea of getting into the ring for a fight against middleweight king Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KO’s).

Froch has also flip-flopped between openly ducking Golovkin, to saying that he would beat him decisively.

This is what Froch said a month ago to Sky Sports.

“If I fight Golovkin, I will back up, take what he’s got, and beat him up.”

Compare the above statement to what Froch said about the Kazakh powerhouse in July 2014.

“Just swerve Golovkin like the plague. He punches like a mule. I don’t need to be in with him. Dangerous fight.”

Froch has also been mentioned as a possible opponent for domestic rival James DeGale, former two-division world champion Bernard Hopkins, and Andre Dirrell, who lost a controversial decision to Froch in October 2009.

Hearn spoke with Nick Parkinson of Boxing Scene about the chances of Froch coming back.

“I’ve spoken to Golovkin’s manager Tom Loeffler and Carl still hasn’t decided if he’s fighting again yet. If he does fight again, there’s a very good chance it will be against Golovkin, but at the moment, there’s nothing. I think now there’s a strong possibility he will retire. People are saying he has to hurry up and make his mind up, but he will make up his mind when he wants to,” Hearn spoke.

“There’s also the possibility of a big domestic fight against James DeGale or a world title to consider, but my gut feeling is that he will not fight again. Boxing fans would love to see him fight again, but if he hasn’t got the desire, he definitely shouldn’t get back in the ring again. If he wants to fight again, he will. If he doesn’t, what a way to go out last time against Groves in front of 80,000 at Wembley.”

Gennady GolovkinFroch will have to make his mind up because Golovkin is on the opponent search. He’s been talking about a potential clash against new IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux, WBA ‘Regular’ super-middleweight champion Fedor Chudinov, former six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya, and undisputed pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Of course, Miguel Cotto, and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez are on the table as well.

In fact, SB Nation reported on Wednesday that Golovkin is trimming down to 154 lbs. in case Mayweather chooses Golovkin as his final opponent in September.

There are many possibilities for Golovkin because he’s willing to fight anyone at any time. The clock is ticking for Froch.
