UK’s undefeated welterweight prospect Frankie Gavin was victorious in his 2013 debut against fellow countryman Jason Welborn. Gavin and Welborn fought yesterday in Walsall, West Midlands, United Kingdom in front of an incredibly enthusiastic crowd that provided an atmospheric presence.

Gavin started the fight strong by displaying impressive hand speed and accuracy, while Welborn was attempting to control the barrage and work from the inside. Welborn ate some pretty significant shots from Gavin — who’s known to have solid power — and to his credit didn’t show signs of being badly affected.

Gavin controlled most of the offense in the fight, but in the late stages of certain rounds Welborn got off some meaningful shots, even some well-timed ones to the body. However, it was obvious that as the fight moved forward it was Gavin’s punches that were starting to count.

Welborn was having a hard time keeping the fight on the inside and Gavin was successful in not taking much damage when they were inside. Gavin was having plenty of success with body shots and he had plenty of openings due to his ability to mix up his attack.

In the 7th round, Gavin landed a damaging left to the body which sent Welborn to the canvas. Welborn was able to make it to his feet in time, but Gavin displayed an excellent ability to finish and the ref ultimately stopped the fight after Gavin landed a series of combinations. It was Gavin’s 11th KO victory in 15 professional wins.

In the post-fight interview Gavin said he is next slated to fight late March or early April, most likely April, with a return in June. Gavin is hoping to stay busy and work his way up the latter by having a stellar 2013.

“I’m number 1 in Europe now and at the end of the year I want to be top 5 in the world,” Gavin said.
