Middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin shined bright in his HBO debut as fans, media and his team had hoped, so what’s next? Well it seems an agreement between Shaw Promotions who promotes WBA and IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale and Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handles the rising star, and native of Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin could not be reached. So it headed to a purse bid, 10 days after the 20th of September. “I can see [Gary] Shaw allowing Geale to be stripped of the title [WBA] I think he feels the fight needs to simmer, be built up,” said Abel Sanchez, trainer of Gennady Golovkin.
WBA and IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale has some tough decisions ahead having both titles, maintaining the status as a unified champion is never a easy task, with mandatory defenses conflicting with fights a champion wants to take. On one hand, he has a mandatory defense of his IBF title against Sam Soliman, a winnable fight. On the other hand, you have Gennady Golovkin the hard hitting power puncher. Who would you pick?
Daniel Geale may choose the route of defending in his home country of Australia. “That’s exactly what [Dmitry] Pirog did, he knocked out Danny Jacobs and disappeared,” explained Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez. What Abel is speaking of is the fact that Pirog scored a 5th round TKO over Jacobs to win the WBO title, but soon after would never come back to fight on US soil having his next 3 fight in his native country of Russia. Sanchez fears Geale will do the same.
One would think this fight isn’t hard to make, having a network to call home as HBO has expressed great interest in having both fighters on the network; Geale for the first time, and Golovkin returning back after his performance in the Turn stone Casino. “The Mecca of boxing is here, on HBO,” added Sanchez.
Abel Sanchez is sure his fighter will fight again before the years out hoping for December. “We still have time for a full training camp if the fight is in December. He definitely has to fight before the end of the year,” mentioned Sanchez.
Writers note: I spoke to Gary Shaw and he said, “The purse bid has been postponed for a few weeks, I have every intention on bidding. I always bid and I can assure you Geale will not vacate the title.”
