WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady “GGG Golovkin (33-0) defeated Willie Monroe Jr. inside six rounds on Saturday evening at The Forum in Los Angeles, collecting his 20th consecutive victory via knockout or stoppage.
Although he is focused on unifying the 160 lb. division, Golovkin has confirmed his interest in dropping down to 154 lbs. to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what could potentially be the legendary pound-for-pound fighter’s final fight. Roger Mayweather, Floyd’s uncle, has stated they are looking towards a fight with Manny Pacquiao as their “Plan A,” while a fight with WBC Silver welterweight champion Amir Khan as their “Plan B.”
When asked at the post-fight press conference, Golovkin once more stated his interest in dropping down to 154 to face Mayweather.
“I’m ready for anybody; this is a big fight. I’m ready,” Golovkin said. “This is business, this is business, show me a contract.”
Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez also added that his fighter would make 154 only for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Only for Floyd,” Sanchez said. “There is no reason to go to 154 for anybody [else]. Canelo has not made 154 in a couple fights, and I’m sure that he’ll be moving to 160. But for Floyd, most definitely,” he added.
On June 20th, Hassan N’dam and David Lemieux fight for the vacant IBF middleweight title. A title that was stripped from former champion Jermain Taylor after the troubled fighter, on January 19, 2015, was arrested without incident and a gun was recovered. The fighter from Little Rock, Arkansas was jailed on five felony counts of aggravated assault. Three felony counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and a misdemeanor count of drug possession after he was found to be in possession of marijuana.
While N’dam and Lemieux are both solid contenders to give Golovkin a challenge, both men have questionable chins. N’dam was dropped six times by Peter Quillin en-route to a unanimous decision loss in December 2012.
While Lemieux was stopped by Marco Antonio Rubio in April 2011, who was knocked out by Golovkin in the second round last October. However, 30 of Lemieux’s 33 victories, have come by way of knockout or stoppage. If he ever fights GGG, it will be interesting to see how long he holds up.
