This weekend, boxing fans will be entertained as the WBC World Featherweight Champion, Jhonny Gonzalez, will be defending his belt against Jorge Arce. And if that wasn’t enough for you, this fight will be taking place in Arce’s hometown of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. This should be a great bout with 2 fighters that love to throw punches and neither likes to leave it up to the judges to determine the winner. This is one of those classic, old school, fights that may not get the headlines it deserves, but it should definitely get the attention of boxing’s hardcore fans.

Jhonny Gonzalez will be stepping into the ring with a record of 56-8 with 49 of his wins coming by way of KO. The 33 year old Gonzalez is ranked as the #2 featherweight in the world and some of his highlight wins include the likes of Ratanachai Sor Vorapin, Fernando Montiel, Hozumi Hasegawa, and Elio Rojas. However, nothing compares to the shocker of him destroying Abner Mares in August of 2013 to win the WBC World Featherweight Title. It was that fight that has pushed Gonzalez to the upper tier of the top ranked featherweights in the world. He will now set his sights on defeating one of the tougher Mexican fighters of the last 15 years, “Travieso”, Jorge Arce.

Arce will be entering the ring with 74 previous bouts under his belt. He has a record of 64-7-2 with 49 KOs and 1 No Contest. His victories include wins over Juan Domingo Cordoba, Yo-Sam Choi, and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Arce was filled with controversy after the no contest fight against Jesus Rojas. After he knocked down Rojas about 10 seconds into the fight, Rojas came back and hit Arce with a headbutt and a low blow at the same time. Then he landed a punch on the back of the head and near the ear. The ref called it a foul, Arce was not able to continue, and the fight was ruled a no contest.

Two fights later, Arce fought against Nonito Donaire, got knocked down 3 times in 3 rounds and then announced his retirement. A year later he ended his retirement to face Jose Carmona and has fought twice since then. Now at 35 years old, Arce is trying to prove that he still has something left in the tank and that he still should be fighting top level fighters. While this may end up being a 2nd retirement for Arce, at least it’s fitting that it’s going to be in front of his hometown.

Even though there is only a two year age difference between these two fighters, their current talent level isn’t in the same range right now. Gonzalez’s arrow is pointing upward after his Mares KO and Arce’s career may have been done with that Rojas fight, much less the Donaire pounding. My prediction for the fight is Gonzalez by 6th round stoppage. He’s the longer fighter and the better fight right now. Plus, Mares wants a rematch and it would lose a lot of steam if Gonzalez was to lose this one, so he has much more to gain. The one thing you can bank on is that this should not be a boring fight and you’re probably going to see at least a knockdown or two, so enjoy the fight.
